NATASHA, PIERRE, AND THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 THE IMPERIAL THEATER MIMI LIEN 2016

MIMI LIEN DESIGNED AN IMMERSIVE THEATRICAL ENVIRONMENT FOR THE 2016 BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF NATASHA, PIERRE, AND THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, AND I WAS HIRED AS HER ASSOCIATE BECAUSE OF MY COMBINED EXPERIENCE OF SET DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURAL THEATER DESIGN. I WORKED CLOSELY WITH MIMI, WITH THE ARCHITECT OF RECORD, CODE CONSULTANT, AND PRODUCTION MANAGER IN ORDER TO CREATE A TEMPORARY REDESIGN OF THE IMPERIAL THEATRE, FOCUSING ON MAKING MIMI’S DESIGN FUNCTION IN THIS HISTORIC BROADWAY THEATER, EXPLORING CREATIVE WAYS TO WORK WITHIN THE NEW YORK CITY BUILDING CODE, AND MAINTAINING SIGHTLINES IN THIS INCREDIBLE RE-ENVISIONING OF HOW TO OCCUPY A THEATER SPACE. THE LOBBY WAS TRANSFORMED AS WELL AS THE ENTIRETY OF THE THEATER’S FRONT OF HOUSE AND BACKSTAGE AREAS.
